In the world of humans, the sun shone, the birds sang, and holidaymakers trampled the grounds of Whitby Abbey. But in the world of vampires, the Haven residents slept, renewing their energy for their next mission at sunset.

Behind the door of number seven, however, six vampires remained wide awake.

‘I can’t believe coffee actually suppresses blood cravings,’ Emma muttered as she drained her fourth cup of the day.

‘It’s no substitute for the real thing, so make sure you mix it up.’ Dylan tossed her a blood bag from the fridge.

‘Tell me again what Henric said.’ Cara positioned Simran in a prime spot on the sofa and gave the girl her full attention.

‘I faked a tiny attack of doubt and insecurity about my nest’s mission, and he lapped it up.’ Simran smiled slyly. ‘He thinks we’re doomed, and this mission to rescue Flora from the Hartfields’ clutches will be the death of us all.’

‘Well, that’s reassuring to hear from our great and wise leader!’ Kai slumped onto the sofa next to Simran and lay his head back to stare up at the ceiling. ‘Why give us this mission if they thought we wouldn’t survive it?’

‘Honestly? He hopes Emma will get herself killed, and the Immortal family will be happy with that and leave the rest of us alone. Sorry, Em,’ Simran said.

Emma shrugged and drained her cup. ‘He’s right. I’m an untrained one-month-old vampire. I’m amazed I haven’t died already!’

Cara rolled her eyes before urging Simran to continue.

‘He said the council is divided over Emma. Most of them want her gone because they think the Hartfields will find out she’s here and attack, but there is a small faction who want to protect Emma.’

‘James,’ Emma muttered.

‘Yes. It seems James has developed a soft spot for our newbie roommate, and nobody, not even Henric, will go against him,’ Simran said.

‘Jeez, what did the two of you do during this mind-meld of yours?’ Dylan winked.

‘Funny. I’ll have you know he was a perfect gentleman and very supportive after I witnessed my father murder my mother,’ said Emma.

Dylan’s sheepish smile softened Emma’s escalating rage, and she gave him a playful nudge as she sat on the chair beside him.

‘The mind-meld taught me two things,’ Emma continued. ‘My dad killed my mum, and Flora has been shielding me from the truth. I’m not sure how that helps our current situation or why that marks me as someone who must be assassinated.’

‘Maybe the tests weren’t meant to be successful, and the Immortal families are getting rid of the evidence,’ suggested Jess. ‘If nobody other than your mum survived the pregnancy and childbirth, then it could be a simple cleanup mission.’

‘Dustin said all the Immortal families have tried at some point to create a Dhampir,’ Kai added. ‘Why get rid of something when you’re the first one in the race to win the prize?’

Emma dropped her cup, spilling the dregs of coffee across the floor.

‘They weren’t trying to get rid of me.’ Emma’s mind flicked through the possibilities. ‘Yes, I was killed, but my attacker was interrupted.
